(Student/Parent Safety Review Sheet)
DIRECTIONS: Students.. Please read through these Safety Guidelines with your Parents.
After reading and understanding each section, Initial that section and have your parent(s) do
the same. Then sign this sheet and return it to Mr. Herlan.
__ NOTE: If there is a statement you do not understand, mark or circle it and we will
go over it together in class.
__ PERSONAL SAFETY:
(To Include.. BODY, EYES, HAIR, HANDS & FINGERS, EARS, JEWELRY, & CLOTHING)
Keep your body out of the cutting line of a tool.
Lift heavy materials with your leg and back muscles, bend knees--not back.
Wear eye protection.
Tie back long hair.
Keep fingers away from sharp cutting edges.
Use a brush to clean machines and work benches--not hands.
Never wear gloves while operating machines.
Wear ear protection in loud, noisy areas.
Remove jewelry such as rings, bracelets, and necklaces when working with tools.
Wear clothing secured tightly to your body.
Do not carry tools in your pockets for any reason.
Cut away from your body with all cutting tools (Sharp end down and away).
__ GENERAL SAFETY:
Pay attention. (Includes, lecture, discussion, and during all operations with tools and equipment)
Listen carefully. (Includes, lecture, discussion, and during all operations with tools and equipment)
Avoid quick movements. (When moving throughout the lab, working with materials and tools, etc.)
Know where exits are. (Front and Rear of lab)
Know where fire extinguishers are.
(Classifications: A-ORDINARY COMBUSTIBLES, B-FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS, C-ELECTRICAL)
Do not leave sharp objects sticking out of a vise or hanging off a table top, chair, etc.
Keep the floor around workbenches and machines clean and clear of scraps at ALL times.
Avoid carrying long pieces of wood, plastic, metal or any other material by yourself.
Don't carry long boards, pipe, or other materials vertically through the shop.
Be willing to assist a classmate at ALL times.
Place combustible waste material in covered metal containers ONLY.

__ TOOL SAFETY:
Before using a tool, study the safety rules and follow them.
Use the right tool for the right job.
Do not operate tools before you have permission from your instructor.
Learn how to adjust hand tools before you use them.
Keep all guards and warnings in place on tools.
Safety Zones are areas around machines used to identify the danger area around that machine.
When carrying hand tools turn sharp points toward the floor.
Position hand tools so their cutting edges point toward the center of the workbench.
Report any defective(broken) tools to your instructor.
__ POWER TOOL SAFETY:
Dress appropriately.
Always wear ANSI approved eye protection.
Never operate a power tool until you have been shown how.
Never operate a power tool when your instructor is out of the lab.
Make sure all safety guards are in place, CHECK BLADE CLEARANCE!
Defects in the wood can be dangerous, be aware of them at all times.
Keep machines and work areas clean and clear of scraps.
Always work with a plan of procedure and working drawings.
Before plugging in a machine, make sure the switch is in the "off" position.
When using extension cords, use the correct wire size.
Keep all power cords away from blades and cutters.
Make sure the tool is properly grounded.
Never work in or around water or moisture.
Safety Zones are 5 foot areas around ALL sides of ALL machines.
When working, Stand in a comfortable, balanced position.
Do not try to handle large, bulky pieces by yourself. Get Help!
Do not use a machine until it is operating at full speed.
Always keep your hands a safe distance from cutters and blades.
Always keep your eyes on the cutting action.
Be alert for any odors that might indicating overheating or malfunction.
If anything unusual happens, turn off the machine immediately.
Never make an adjustment UNLESS the power is off.
Never leave a machine with the power on.
Wait until the blade/belt comes to a complete stop!
Keep the work area neat, clean, and in good order at all times.
Never talk to or disturb anyone working with power equipment.
Follow the specific safety rules for each machine.
All Electric Tools/Appliances are to be UL approved prior to use!
